Junias appears in Romans 16:7, where Paul greets Andronicus and Junias (or Junia) as his relatives (συγγενεῖς, fellow Jews) and fellow prisoners who are "well known among the apostles." Whether the name is masculine (Junias) or feminine (Junia) is debated; the accusative form Ἰουνιᾶν could be either. Many early interpreters understood it as a woman's name (Junia was common; Junias was rare). If feminine, Junia is a female apostle, imprisoned for the faith and recognized by the apostolic circle. The phrase "notable among the apostles" indicates their significant reputation in the early church.
