El griego ἱμάτιον designaba originalmente el manto rectangular exterior que se llevaba sobre la túnica (χιτών), pero el uso neotestamentario lo extiende a la ropa en general. Cuando una mujer toca el vestido de Jesús (Mt 9:20) o las multitudes tienden sus mantos en el camino (Mt 21:8), el plural ἱμάτια simplemente significa 'ropas'. Sin embargo, cuando Jesús instruye no volver por el ἱμάτιον (Mt 24:18) o los soldados se reparten su manto (Jn 19:23-24), se tiene a la vista el manto exterior específico. El español distingue bien entre 'vestiduras' (sentido general) y 'manto' (prenda exterior concreta).

En Mt 5:40 Jesús contrasta el χιτών (túnica interior) con el ἱμάτιον (manto exterior), haciendo explícita la distinción.
