Jeremiah, the major prophet; also referenced in mistaken attribution
Jeremiah the prophet appears three times in Matthew's Gospel. Matthew 2:17 introduces a fulfillment quotation with 'then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet.' Matthew 16:14 records speculation that Jesus might be 'Jeremiah or one of the prophets.' Matthew 27:9 attributes a prophecy to Jeremiah, though the closest parallel is actually Zechariah 11:13—a textual puzzle that has generated much discussion. The Hebrew name יִרְמְיָהוּ means 'Yahweh exalts' or 'Yahweh establishes.' Jeremiah's themes of judgment, suffering, and new covenant made him a natural point of comparison for Jesus' ministry.

Senses
1. sense 1 The single sense identifies the major prophet who authored the biblical book bearing his name. The Matthew 16 reference shows Jeremiah was considered a possible category for understanding Jesus—a suffering prophet calling Israel to repentance. The two 'fulfillment' citations connect Jesus' story to prophetic patterns, though the Matthew 27 attribution to Jeremiah rather than Zechariah remains a crux. Some suggest composite quotation, others a different textual tradition, others that 'Jeremiah' could introduce a collection including Zechariah. The multilingual renderings uniformly transliterate or use traditional forms of the prophetic name, maintaining consistency across translation traditions.
