Jannes is named alongside Jambres in 2 Timothy 3:8 as one of the Egyptian sorcerers who resisted Moses. Though the Exodus account doesn't preserve their names, Jewish interpretive tradition did, and Paul draws on this to illustrate opposition to God's messengers. The historical Jannes and Jambres duplicated Moses's early miracles through magical arts before being forced to acknowledge God's superior power. Paul uses them typologically: as they opposed Moses with counterfeit power, so false teachers oppose the gospel with counterfeit faith. The names appear in Jewish and pagan magical texts, confirming their currency in the ancient world.
