θῠσι-αστήριον G2379
Altar; a raised structure for presenting sacrifices and offerings to God in temple or heavenly worship.
Derived from the verb thyō ('to sacrifice'), thysiastērion denotes the consecrated structure upon which offerings are placed before God. In the Gospels Jesus references the Jerusalem temple altar when teaching about reconciliation before worship (Matt 5:23-24) and exposes Pharisaic oath-casuistry tied to it (Matt 23:18-20). Paul invokes the altar to ground the right of gospel ministers to material support (1 Cor 9:13). In Hebrews and Revelation the term extends to a heavenly altar of incense and a cosmic altar beneath which martyrs' souls cry out, showing how the physical structure becomes a symbol of perpetual communion between God and his people.
