nails, metal fasteners used for crucifixion
These are the iron spikes driven through Jesus's hands (and feet) to fasten him to the cross. The word appears only in John 20:25, both times in Thomas's skeptical declaration: 'Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.' The double mention emphasizes Thomas's empirical demands—he wants tangible proof, specifically the nail wounds. Classical Greek used the term for ornamental studs, shoenails, and ordinary fasteners, but here it carries the full horror of crucifixion's brutality.

Senses
1. sense 1 Thomas's insistence on seeing the nail-marks (not just wounds generally) shows he knew the details of Jesus's execution and wanted verification that this wasn't a ghost or hallucination but the same crucified body. When Jesus appears and invites Thomas to touch the nail-prints (20:27), he meets the skeptic's terms while also rebuking the demand: 'blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed' (20:29). The nails thus become evidence of both Christ's suffering and his resurrection—the wounds prove identity and victory together.
