Ζεβεδαῖος G2199
Zebedee — Galilean fisherman, father of the apostles James and John
Zebedaios is the Greek form of the Hebrew Zavdiyah ('Yahweh has bestowed'), identifying the Galilean fisherman whose sons James and John left their nets to follow Jesus. All 12 NT occurrences function as a patronymic identifier — 'James the son of Zebedee,' 'the sons of Zebedee' — situating these prominent apostles within their family and trade. Zebedee himself appears directly only in the calling narrative (Matt 4:21-22; Mark 1:19-20), where he is left in the boat mending nets, a poignant image of what discipleship costs a family. His wife appears in Matt 20:20 and 27:56. The name is remarkably stable across languages: Spanish 'Zebedeo,' French 'Zebedee,' German 'Zebedäus.'
