Zacchaeus; Hebrew name meaning 'pure' or 'righteous,' borne by the chief tax collector of Jericho
This name appears only in Luke's account of the wealthy chief tax collector who climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus passing through Jericho (Luke 19). The Hebrew root (זַכַּי) carries connotations of purity or righteousness—an ironic contrast to the social stigma attached to tax collectors in first-century Judea. Luke's narrative turns on this tension: the man whose name means "righteous" is precisely the one religious leaders would have considered unrighteous. When Jesus calls him down and declares salvation has come to his house, the story fulfills the meaning embedded in his name. The multilingual forms (French Zachée, Spanish Zakchaîos) preserve the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew original.

Senses
1. sense 1 The proper name of the chief tax collector in Jericho who hosted Jesus and pledged to give half his possessions to the poor and restore fourfold what he had taken unjustly. Luke uses the name three times in rapid succession (19:2, 5, 8), building the narrative around this named individual. As a transliteration from Hebrew זַכַּי (cf. Nehemiah 7:14), the name carried associations of purity that would have resonated ironically with Luke's original audience given Zacchaeus's profession.
