N-NMS  |  1× in 1 sense
Eutychus, a personal name meaning 'fortunate'; a young man at Troas
Eutychus was a young man in Troas who fell from a third-story window during Paul's lengthy sermon and was taken up dead, but Paul restored him to life (Acts 20:9-12). His name ironically means 'fortunate' or 'lucky'—though falling asleep during a sermon and plummeting to his death seemed decidedly unfortunate until Paul's intervention made the name prophetically accurate. The episode displays both Paul's pastoral concern and apostolic power.

Senses
1. sense 1 Luke's detailed account (Acts 20:9-12) notes that Eutychus sank into deep sleep as Paul preached past midnight in a lamp-filled upper room—perhaps oxygen-depleted and certainly exhausting for a young person. His three-story fall killed him, but Paul embraced him and declared 'his life is in him,' echoing Elijah and Elisha's resuscitation miracles. The name 'fortunate one' proved apt after all, and the church 'was not a little comforted.'
