Godliness, piety, devout reverence; faithful living rooted in proper devotion to God.
Eusebeia denotes a life oriented toward God in both inner reverence and outward conduct. It is the signature virtue of the Pastoral Epistles, where Paul urges Timothy to 'train yourself for godliness' (1 Tim 4:7) and names it among the virtues to pursue (1 Tim 6:11). The 'mystery of godliness' in 1 Timothy 3:16 anchors the concept in the incarnation itself. Second Peter adds eusebeia to the ladder of spiritual growth alongside self-control, endurance, and love (2 Pet 1:6–7). The word bridges inward disposition and visible practice — not mere religious feeling but a whole pattern of God-honoring life. The Spanish 'piedad,' French 'piété,' and German 'Frömmigkeit' all capture both the devotional warmth and the ethical seriousness of the term.

Senses
1. godliness, piety, devout reverence Reverence toward God expressed through faithful, upright living — both the inward disposition of devotion and its outward expression in conduct. Central to the Pastoral Epistles, where it appears as the goal of spiritual training (1 Tim 4:7–8), the content of sound doctrine (1 Tim 6:3), and a virtue to be actively pursued (1 Tim 6:11). In 2 Peter 1:6–7 it occupies a key position in the chain of Christian virtues. Spanish 'piedad' and French 'piété' reflect the devotional dimension; German 'Frömmigkeit' captures the holistic piety. 15×
