Este verbo significa tener la fuerza suficiente para ayudar, asistir o aliviar a alguien en necesidad. En el uso clásico podía significar repeler un daño o brindar apoyo. En el Nuevo Testamento aparece exclusivamente en 1 Timoteo 5, dentro de las instrucciones de Pablo sobre qué viudas debe sostener la iglesia. La palabra conlleva el sentido de proporcionar alivio práctico y asistencia, especialmente a personas vulnerables que carecen de otros recursos.

1. Socorrer al necesitado — Los traductores emplean consistentemente términos de ayuda: en español «socorra, socorrió». Las tres apariciones se hallan en 1 Timoteo 5, relativas al apoyo a las viudas: una mujer que ha «socorrido» a los afligidos (5:10), si algún creyente tiene viudas a quienes «socorrer» (5:16, primer uso), y la exhortación a «que ella las socorra» para no gravar a la iglesia (5:16, segundo uso). 3×
