This place name refers to a village about seven miles (sixty stadia) from Jerusalem. In Luke 24:13, two disciples are walking to Emmaus on the day of Jesus' resurrection when the risen Lord joins them, though they don't recognize Him. He expounds the Scriptures concerning Himself, and their hearts burn within them. Only when He breaks bread do they recognize Him—then He vanishes. Emmaus becomes the setting for one of the most beloved post-resurrection appearances, a story of eyes opened and faith rekindled.
