Elisha; Hebrew name meaning 'God is salvation,' the prophet who succeeded Elijah
This is the Greek form of Elisha, the prophet who succeeded Elijah in the ninth century BC. In Luke 4:27, Jesus mentions Elisha to illustrate that God's mercy extends beyond Israel's borders: many lepers were in Israel, but only Naaman the Syrian was cleansed. The reference stings His Nazareth audience, who become enraged at the implication. Elisha's ministry, marked by miracles of compassion, foreshadows Jesus' own inclusive mission to Gentiles as well as Jews.

Senses
1. sense 1 Elisha, the prophet who succeeded Elijah and ministered in Israel during the ninth century BC. In Luke 4:27, Jesus cites Elisha's healing of Naaman the Syrian to provoke His hearers: God's grace overflowed Israel's boundaries even in the Old Testament. The reference anticipates the scandal of Jesus' own ministry to outcasts and Gentiles, and the reaction shows how deeply this challenged Jewish assumptions.
