Eleazar, ancestor of Jesus in Matthew's genealogy
The Greek form of the Hebrew name meaning 'God has helped,' referring to an ancestor of Jesus. Eleazar appears twice in Matthew 1:15, listed in the post-exilic portion of the genealogy. Little is known of this individual beyond his place in the lineage. The name was common in post-exilic Judaism, borne by several priests and leaders including Aaron's son.

Senses
1. sense 1 Referring to a post-exilic ancestor in Jesus' genealogy, this proper name appears twice in Matthew 1:15 as the genealogy traces the line from Babylonian exile to Joseph. The repetition reflects Matthew's formulaic 'A begot B' pattern. The transliterations vary across languages (Eleasar in German, Éléazar in French) as they render the Hebrew original through Greek.
