Image, likeness, representation -- a visible form reflecting an original, whether coin portrait, idol, or divine nature
Denotes a visible likeness or representation that mirrors an original. When Jesus asks 'Whose image is this?' (Matt 22:20), the word carries both political and theological weight. Paul develops the concept profoundly: Christ is the image of the invisible God (Col 1:15; 2 Cor 4:4), and believers are being transformed into that same image (Rom 8:29; 2 Cor 3:18). In Revelation, the 'image of the beast' (Rev 13:14-15) forms a dark counterpart -- a false likeness demanding idolatrous worship. The range spans from coin portraits to Christological glory to apocalyptic idolatry.

1. image, likeness, representation — A visible likeness or representation that participates in its original. Used of the emperor's portrait on a coin (Matt 22:20; Mark 12:16), of idols as degraded representations (Rom 1:23; Rev 13:14-15), of Christ as image of the invisible God (2 Cor 4:4; Col 1:15), and of believers being transformed into Christ's likeness (Rom 8:29; 2 Cor 3:18). The word implies real correspondence, not mere resemblance. 23×
