make/establish a covenant; assign, appoint, grant

Senses
1. make/establish a covenant To make, establish, or ratify a covenant or testament, used in the middle voice in the technical sense of covenant-making between God and his people. God promises to make a new covenant with the house of Israel (Heb 8:10 'I will make a covenant'; Heb 10:16 'the covenant I will make'), the one who makes a covenant/testament must die for it to take effect (Heb 9:16, 17 'the one having made the testament'), and God made a covenant with Abraham and his descendants (Acts 3:25 'the covenant God made with your fathers'). Multilingual glosses: arb: أَعْقِدُ/عَاهَدَ, heb: אֶכְרֹת/כָּרַת/מְצַוֶּה, kor: 세우리라/유언한 자, spa: pactar/hacer testamento.

2. assign, appoint, grant To assign, appoint, or bequeath something to someone, used in the sense of conferring authority or an inheritance. At the Last Supper, Jesus declares 'I assign to you, just as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom' (Luke 22:29), where the same verb is used twice: once for Jesus's act of granting the kingdom to the disciples, and once for the Father's prior granting of the kingdom to Jesus.
