Δαμασκός G1154
Damascus; the ancient Syrian capital, prominent in Paul's conversion narrative.
Damaskos is the Greek rendering of Hebrew Dammeseq, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. In the New Testament it appears almost exclusively in connection with Paul's dramatic conversion and early ministry. It was on the road to Damascus that Saul encountered the risen Christ (Acts 9:3; 22:6; 26:12), and it was in Damascus that he first preached and then escaped over the city wall in a basket (Acts 9:19–25; 2 Cor 11:32–33). Paul also mentions returning there after his time in Arabia (Gal 1:17). The city thus serves as a pivotal geographical marker in the narrative of early Christianity's most influential apostle.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The ancient city of Damascus in Syria, rendered consistently across languages (Spanish 'Damasco,' French 'Damas,' German 'Damaskus'). All fifteen NT occurrences relate to the apostle Paul — his mission to arrest believers there (Acts 9:2), his encounter with Christ on the road (Acts 9:3; 22:6; 26:12), his early preaching and escape (Acts 9:19–25; 2 Cor 11:32), and his return from Arabia (Gal 1:17). The city functions as the defining geographic setting of Paul's conversion. 15×
