γένν-ημα G1081
Fruit, produce, or yield of the earth; also offspring or brood, used as a metaphorical term of reproach.
A noun with two quite different applications. In its agricultural sense, it refers to the fruit or produce of the land, most memorably in the phrase 'fruit of the vine' spoken by Jesus at the Last Supper (Matt 26:29; Mark 14:25; Luke 22:18). In 2 Corinthians 9:10 Paul uses it of the harvest God multiplies for generous givers. The other sense is sharply metaphorical: 'offspring of vipers' — a stinging epithet hurled by John the Baptist and Jesus at the religious elite (Matt 3:7; 12:34; 23:33; Luke 3:7). Hindi translations use 'संतान' (offspring) for this second sense, underscoring the biological metaphor of descent from poisonous stock.
Senses
1. fruit / produce — Agricultural fruit, produce, or yield — what the earth or a vine brings forth. Jesus uses the phrase 'fruit of the vine' at the Last Supper to refer to wine (Matt 26:29; Mark 14:25; Luke 22:18), and Paul speaks of God increasing the 'fruits' of the Corinthians' righteousness (2 Cor 9:10). Spanish 'fruto/frutos' and German 'Ertrag' both emphasize the concrete, harvested product. 4×

2. offspring / brood — Offspring or brood, used metaphorically in the biting phrase 'offspring of vipers' (gennemata echidnon). John the Baptist (Matt 3:7; Luke 3:7) and Jesus (Matt 12:34; 23:33) apply this epithet to those whose character reveals corrupt parentage. Spanish splits between 'crías' (young of an animal) and 'engendros' (something engendered), and Hindi uses 'संतानो' (descendants), all highlighting the biological lineage metaphor at work — these people are what their spiritual ancestry has produced. 4×
