γενεά G1074
generation — the people living in a given era, or the time-span of one generational succession
Genea derives from the root gen- ('to be born') and carries a double resonance throughout the New Testament: it names both the people alive during a particular period and the period itself. Jesus uses it most memorably in rebukes — 'this wicked and adulterous generation' (Matt 12:39) — where it takes on a moral coloring, characterizing an entire age by its spiritual disposition. In the Matthean genealogy (Matt 1:17), it marks the measured intervals of salvation history: fourteen generations from Abraham to David. The translation traditions consistently render it with a single term — Spanish 'generacion,' French 'generation,' German 'Geschlecht' — confirming a unified semantic profile.
Senses
1. Generation (people of an era / lineage period) — The people living in a shared epoch, or the time-span of one genealogical link. Jesus frequently charges 'this generation' with moral appraisal (Matt 11:16; 12:39), while Matthew 1:17 uses it to measure salvation-historical intervals. Spanish 'generacion,' French 'generation,' German 'Geschlecht' confirm a unified temporal-collective sense. 43×
