N-GMS  |  2× in 1 sense
Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee and doctor of the Law, teacher of Saul of Tarsus
This proper name, from Hebrew גַּמְלִיאֵל (Gamli'el, possibly 'reward of God' or 'God is my reward'), identifies Gamaliel the Elder, one of the most honored rabbis in Jewish history. A grandson of the famous Hillel, Gamaliel held the title Rabban ('our master') and sat on the Sanhedrin. Acts presents him as a voice of wisdom and moderation. He advised the council not to fight against the apostles, lest they find themselves fighting against God (Acts 5:34). Later, Paul identifies himself as having been educated 'at the feet of Gamaliel' (Acts 22:3), highlighting his impeccable Jewish credentials. Gamaliel represents the best of Pharisaic learning and prudence.

Senses
1. sense 1 Acts 5:34 introduces Gamaliel as 'a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people,' who then delivers his famous counsel urging patience with the apostles. Acts 22:3 has Paul declaring he was 'brought up in this city, educated at the feet of Gamaliel according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers.' Spanish 'Gamaliél/de Gamaliél', French forms, and German 'Γαμαλιήλ' preserve the Hebrew name. Both passages establish Gamaliel's authority: as a respected leader whose wisdom prevented persecution (Acts 5) and as the distinguished teacher whose student was Saul/Paul (Acts 22).
