Γαλιλαῖος G1057
Galilean — a native or inhabitant of the region of Galilee in northern Israel; a demonym
The adjective Γαλιλαῖος (Galilaios) identifies a person from Galilee, the northern region of Israel around the Sea of Galilee. All eleven NT occurrences function as a proper gentilic marking ethnic-geographic origin. Peter is recognized as a Galilean by his accent during Jesus' trial (Matt 26:69; Mark 14:70). The angels call the apostles 'men of Galilee' at the Ascension (Acts 1:11), and Pentecost hearers marvel that these speakers are Galileans (Acts 2:7). Spanish 'galileo,' French 'Galiléen,' and Arabic 'jalili' all transliterate directly.
Senses
1. Galilean — A person from the region of Galilee in northern Israel, used as a proper demonym. Applied to Jesus and his disciples (Matt 26:69; Mark 14:70; Luke 22:59, 23:6), the apostles at Pentecost (Acts 1:11; 2:7), Judas the insurrectionist (Acts 5:37), and worshippers killed by Pilate (Luke 13:1-2). Spanish 'galileo,' German 'Galiläer,' and Hindi 'galili' confirm uniform transliteration across languages. 11×
