Γαλιλαία G1056
Galilaia -- Galilee, the northern region of Palestine central to Jesus's earthly ministry
Galilaia (from Hebrew ha-galil, 'the circle' or 'the district') denotes the northern region of Palestine where Jesus grew up, called his first disciples, and performed the majority of his public ministry. Isaiah's ancient designation 'Galilee of the Gentiles' (Matt 4:15, quoting Isa 9:1) hints at the region's mixed ethnic character, which made it theologically significant as the place where light first dawned. With 61 occurrences across the Gospels and Acts, it is one of the most frequently named regions in the New Testament. Every target language preserves the toponym with minimal phonetic adaptation: Spanish Galilea, French Galilee, German Galiläa.
