Profano, irreverente; accesible a todos (no sagrado), por tanto común, impío o ritualmente impuro.
Describe lo que es 'pisable' —terreno abierto en contraposición al espacio sagrado— y por extensión lo que es común, impío o irreverente. En las Epístolas Pastorales, Pablo advierte contra las 'fábulas profanas y de viejas' (1 Tim 4:7) y las 'profanas y vanas palabrerías' (1 Tim 6:20; 2 Tim 2:16), usando el término para señalar discursos que profanan lo que debería ser santo. En 1 Tim 1:9 caracteriza a personas inicuas junto con los 'impíos', y Hebreos 12:16 lo aplica a Esaú como arquetipo del profano que cambió su primogenitura sagrada por una comida.
