Extranjero, persona que no habla griego; cualquiera ajeno a la identidad lingüística y cultural grecorromana.
βάρβαρος imitaba originalmente el sonido del habla incomprensible —'bar-bar'— y designaba a cualquiera que no hablara griego. En el Nuevo Testamento el término aparece sin la connotación peyorativa moderna de 'bárbaro'. Los nativos malteses son llamados βάρβαροι simplemente porque no hablaban ni griego ni latín (Hch 28:2, 4), y Pablo empareja 'griegos y bárbaros' como un merismo abarcador de toda la humanidad (Rom 1:14). En 1 Cor 14:11, Pablo lo usa de manera incisiva: si no puedes entender la lengua que se habla, hablante y oyente son 'extranjeros' el uno para el otro. La palabra así ilumina la realidad multilingüe e intercultural de la iglesia primitiva.

El término no conllevaba juicio moral inherente en la antigüedad; era ante todo una clasificación lingüística. En Hch 28:2 y 28:4, los malteses son βάρβαροι porque hablaban un dialecto púnico, aunque Lucas elogia su 'extraordinaria amabilidad'.
