Flute, pipe; a wind instrument played by blowing across holes to produce musical tones
The aulos was a reed instrument similar to a modern oboe or clarinet, central to Greek music for celebrations, worship, and mourning. Paul uses it in 1 Corinthians to argue that even musical instruments need distinct tones to convey meaning—if flute or harp plays unclear notes, how will anyone know the tune? The analogy teaches that spiritual gifts, especially tongues, must communicate intelligibly or they fail their purpose.

Senses
1. sense 1 First Corinthians 14:7 mentions 'a flute' (Spanish 'flauta,' French 'flûte,' German 'Flöte') alongside the harp to illustrate the necessity of distinction in tones. If the instrument makes no clear melody, no one can dance or sing along. Paul applies this to tongues: speech without interpretation is noise, not communication. Even non-rational instruments must produce distinct sounds; how much more should rational humans speak clearly when building up the church.
