ἀπαρά-βᾰτος G0531
permanent, unchangeable; not subject to alteration or transfer
This adjective describes something that cannot be altered, transferred, or passed to another. Classical Greek used it for unalterable philosophical principles, infallible prophecies, or inviolable agreements. Hebrews 7:24 applies it to Christ's priesthood: because He continues forever, He holds a 'permanent' priesthood—one that cannot pass to a successor. Unlike the Levitical priesthood, which transferred from one mortal priest to another through death, Jesus's priesthood is inviolable and eternal. The term emphasizes both permanence and exclusivity.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Christ's permanent priesthood stands in sharp contrast to the succession of mortal Levitical priests. Each high priest served temporarily, then death necessitated a replacement. But Jesus, who lives forever, needs no successor—His priesthood is 'aparabatos.' Spanish 'intransferible' emphasizes non-transferability, French 'immuable' stresses immutability, German 'unveränderlich' (unchangeable) captures permanence, while English 'permanent' combines both aspects. The theological point: Jesus alone mediates forever. 1×
