Compuesto de la alfa privativa y ὑποτάσσω ('sujetar, ordenar bajo'), este adjetivo describe lo que no ha sido puesto bajo autoridad. Aparece en dos registros distintos. En las Epístolas Pastorales caracteriza a personas rebeldes: los desobedientes e insubordinados (1 Tim 1:9), hijos indisciplinados (Titus 1:6) y los muchos contumaces y engañadores (Titus 1:10). Sin embargo, Hebrews 2:8 lo emplea en un sentido cósmico-escatológico: citando el Psalm 8, el autor señala que nada quedó 'sin sujetar' al ser humano, aunque 'todavía no vemos todas las cosas sujetas'. El castellano 'insubordinado' capta bien el matiz de desafío.
