Prep  |  3× in 1 sense
without, apart from; expressing absence or lack of something
This preposition denotes absence or separation from something essential or expected. In Matthew 10:29, it describes God's sovereign awareness—not even a sparrow falls 'without' the Father's knowledge. Peter uses it twice in his first epistle to describe Christian witness and hospitality that proceed 'without' verbal proclamation (3:1) or grumbling (4:9). The word always takes the genitive case and emphasizes the notable absence of what follows.

Senses
1. sense 1 The term appears in all three NT occurrences with the sense of 'without' or 'apart from.' The Greek ἄνευ consistently renders as 'sin' (Spanish), 'sans' (French), showing its core meaning of absence. Jesus uses it to express divine oversight that leaves nothing unnoticed (Matt 10:29), while Peter applies it to Christian conduct that operates independently of certain actions—faith witnessed without words, hospitality given without complaint.
