Ἅγαρ G0028
Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian maidservant and mother of Ishmael
Hagar was Sarah's Egyptian slave who became Abraham's concubine and bore Ishmael. In Galatians 4, Paul employs her story allegorically: Hagar represents Mount Sinai and the covenant of slavery to law, corresponding to earthly Jerusalem in bondage. Her name appears twice in this passage (4:24-25) as Paul contrasts two covenants—one born of slavery (Hagar/Sinai/present Jerusalem) and one born of promise (Sarah/heavenly Jerusalem). The typology is complex and controversial, but Paul uses Hagar to represent the principle of attempting righteousness through law rather than promise, slavery rather than freedom.
Senses
1. sense 1 — Cross-linguistic glosses show slight variation in Greek spelling (Ἁγάρ, Ἁγὰρ with accent differences) but all preserve the Hebrew name Hagar through transliteration. Paul's double reference in Galatians 4:24-25 establishes the allegorical framework: Hagar = Sinai covenant = slavery = earthly Jerusalem. The multilingual uniformity reflects her identity as a known Old Testament figure whose story Paul reinterprets for theological instruction about law versus promise, slavery versus freedom in Christ. 2×
