Hagar was Sarah's Egyptian slave who became Abraham's concubine and bore Ishmael. Her name appears twice in this passage (4:24-25) as Paul contrasts two covenants—one born of slavery (Hagar/Sinai/present Jerusalem) and one born of promise (Sarah/heavenly Jerusalem).
