Ἀβραάμ G0011
Abraham — the patriarch, father of Isaac, to whom God gave the covenant of promise and the land of Canaan.
Abraam is the indeclinable Greek transliteration of the Hebrew Avraham, the great patriarch of Israel. Every New Testament occurrence points back to the figure of Genesis 12-25: the man called out of Ur, given a covenant of circumcision, promised innumerable descendants, and tested with the offering of Isaac. In the Gospels, Jesus invokes Abraham to redefine covenant membership — 'God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham' (Matt 3:9). Paul builds his theology of justification by faith on Abraham's example (Rom 4; Gal 3:6-9). The phrase 'Abraham's bosom' (Luke 16:22) became a figure for the blessed afterlife. Spanish Abrahan, French Abraham, and German Abraham all transliterate directly.
Senses
1. Abraam — The proper name of the patriarch Abraham, father of Isaac and grandfather of Jacob, to whom God gave the foundational covenant of promise (Gen 12:1-3; 15:6; 17:5). In the New Testament he appears as the paradigm of faith (Rom 4:3; Gal 3:6-9; Heb 11:8-19), the ancestor invoked in genealogies (Matt 1:1-2), and the figure whose 'bosom' signifies blessed rest (Luke 16:22). All target languages transliterate the name directly. 73×
