1. Tirzah (proper noun) — A proper noun (tirtsah, meaning 'pleasure, beauty') used for both a person and a place in the Hebrew Bible. (1) As a personal name: one of the five daughters of Zelophehad of the tribe of Manasseh who petitioned for inheritance rights (Num 26:33, 27:1, 36:11; Jos 17:3). (2) As a place name: a Canaanite royal city conquered by Joshua (Jos 12:24), which later became the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel before Samaria. Multiple kings of Israel reigned 'in Tirzah' (betirtsah): Jeroboam's wife went to Tirzah (1 Kgs 14:17), Baasha reigned in Tirzah (1 Kgs 15:21, 15:33), Elah, Zimri, and Omri also ruled there (1 Kgs 16:6-23). Menahem attacked 'from Tirzah' (mittirtsah, 2 Kgs 15:14, 15:16). Song 6:4 uses it as a standard of beauty: 'you are beautiful like Tirzah' (ketirtsah). All multilingual glosses consistently transliterate: arb Tirsata, deu Tirtsah, spa Tirtsah/Tirsa, hin Tirzah/Tirsa, kor Dieureusa. 18×
