N-proper-ms  |  6× in 1 sense
Talmai; a proper name borne by an Anakite giant in Hebron and by the king of Geshur, David's father-in-law.
Talmai names two distinct biblical figures. The first is one of the three Anakite giants dwelling in Hebron whom Caleb's forces drove out during the conquest (Num 13:22; Josh 15:14; Judg 1:10). The second is the king of Geshur whose daughter Maacah became one of David's wives and the mother of Absalom (2 Sam 3:3; 13:37; 1 Chr 3:2). When Absalom fled after killing Amnon, he took refuge with his grandfather Talmai in Geshur. The Septuagint renders the name variously as Thommei, Thalmein, and Tholomei, reflecting uncertainty about the original vocalization.

Senses
1. Talmai (proper name) The proper name Talmai, designating two individuals: (a) an Anakite giant in Hebron encountered during the conquest (Num 13:22; Josh 15:14; Judg 1:10), and (b) the king of Geshur, father-in-law of David through his daughter Maacah, and grandfather of Absalom who sheltered Absalom after Amnon's murder (2 Sam 3:3; 13:37; 1 Chr 3:2). Spanish Talmai/Talmay, French Talmai, and German Talmai all transliterate uniformly. The LXX variants (Thommei, Tholomei, Thalmein) suggest the name's pronunciation was already uncertain in antiquity.
