The box tree was a small evergreen, growing up to 20 feet high on Mount Lebanon, valued for its dense, fine-grained wood. In Isaiah's visions of restoration, the box tree appears alongside cypress and pine as part of God's beautifying of his sanctuary and the renewed creation. Both Isaiah 41:19 and 60:13 use it in promises of transformation—wilderness becoming garden, desolation becoming glory. The ancient versions consistently understood it as the box tree, though some scholars have suggested other evergreens.
