Sheshach, a cryptic name for Babylon using the Atbash cipher substitution system
Sheshach appears in Jeremiah as a coded reference to Babylon, employing the Atbash cipher where letters are reversed (first for last, second for second-to-last, etc.). In this system, Babel (בבל) becomes Sheshach (ששך). Jeremiah 25:26 and 51:41 both use this cryptogram, possibly for literary effect, rhetorical indirection, or symbolic purposes. Ancient Jewish and later interpreters recognized the cipher. The Septuagint sometimes transliterates it, other times renders it as 'Babylon,' showing early awareness of the equivalence.

Senses
1. sense 1 A literary code name for Babylon created through alphabetic substitution, functioning as a prophetic device to simultaneously reveal and conceal judgment against Babylon. The Atbash system was known in ancient Jewish interpretation and appears elsewhere in Jeremiah (25:26 may be a gloss based on 51:41's original use). The double occurrence allows Jeremiah to name Babylon without naming it directly, perhaps heightening rhetorical impact or providing plausible deniability in a sensitive political context. All modern translations recognize this as Babylon encoded.
