Sheshbazzar, a prince of Judah who led the first return from Babylonian exile
Sheshbazzar appears in Ezra as the leader to whom Cyrus entrusted the temple vessels for return to Jerusalem. Ezra 1:8, 11 identify him as 'the prince of Judah' who received the sacred items, while 5:14, 16 (in the Aramaic section) describe him as the one appointed governor who laid the temple foundation. His identity has been debated—some equate him with Zerubbabel, others with Shenazzar (1 Chronicles 3:18), still others see him as a distinct person. The Babylonian name probably means 'Shamash-protect-the-son' or similar.

Senses
1. sense 1 The leader of the first wave of Jewish returnees from Babylon, entrusted with temple vessels and early reconstruction efforts. The occurrences in Ezra 1 are in Hebrew, while those in Ezra 5 are Aramaic, showing the name's stability across both languages. The various Septuagint forms (Sabanassar, Sanabassaros, Sabasares) reflect transliteration challenges. His role in receiving vessels and founding work makes him crucial to restoration history, even if his exact identity and relationship to other leaders remains disputed among scholars.
