V-Qal-Perf-3cp  |  14× in 2 senses
To swarm, teem; creatures multiplying abundantly, or (as participle) a swarming/creeping creature.
Evokes the teeming vitality of creation — waters swarming with fish, the land crawling with creatures, peoples multiplying beyond counting. In Genesis 1:20-21, God commands the waters to 'swarm with swarms of living creatures,' and the verb recurs whenever Scripture wants to convey explosive, prolific reproduction (Gen 8:17; 9:7; Exod 1:7, of Israel in Egypt). The participial form (ha-shorets) becomes a classifier for small animals that move in swarms — the 'creeping things' of Leviticus 11:29-46 whose contact renders one unclean. Spanish pulular and German wimmeln both capture this vivid image of abundance in motion.

Senses
1. to swarm, teem, multiply The verbal action of living creatures multiplying abundantly, filling a space by swarming or teeming in great numbers. Genesis 1:20-21 uses it for the primordial fecundity of creation; Genesis 9:7 and Exodus 1:7 apply it to human population growth — Israel 'swarmed' in Egypt, an echo of the creation mandate. The waters of Ezekiel's temple vision (47:9) will teem with fish wherever the river flows. Spanish produjeron abundantemente and French essaim ('swarm') convey the explosive vitality of this sense.

2. swarming creature, creeping thing The participial or substantival use designating creatures characterized by swarming or creeping movement — a taxonomic classifier for small animals that move in masses. Leviticus 11:29-46 uses ha-shorets ('the swarming thing') repeatedly to define a category of ritually unclean creatures: weasels, mice, lizards, and their kin. Genesis 7:21 lists 'every swarming thing that swarms on the earth' among those destroyed in the flood. Spanish el que repta ('the creeping one') and German das wimmelt ('that which swarms') reflect this nominal, classificatory function.
