Shemaiah — theophoric name meaning 'Yahweh has heard,' borne by prophets, priests, Levites, and others
Shema'yah (also Shema'yahu in the longer theophoric form) combines shama' ('to hear') with the divine name Yah, yielding 'Yahweh has heard.' Its 41 occurrences refer to numerous individuals spanning Israel's history from the monarchy through the postexilic period. The most prominent is Shemaiah the prophet who prevented Rehoboam from warring against the northern tribes after the kingdom's division (1 Kgs 12:22; 2 Chr 11:2; 12:5, 7, 15). A later Shemaiah was the false prophet from Nehelam whom Jeremiah condemned (Jer 29:24-32). The name also belongs to a Levite who helped distribute tithes under Hezekiah (2 Chr 31:15), a descendant of Zerubbabel (1 Chr 3:22), and multiple priestly and Levitical figures in Nehemiah's reconstruction community. Translations uniformly transliterate rather than translate.

Senses
1. Shemaiah (proper name) The proper masculine name Shema'yah/Shema'yahu ('Yahweh has heard'), identifying at least fifteen different individuals across the biblical record. The most theologically significant are the prophet who delivered God's word to Rehoboam against civil war (1 Kgs 12:22; 2 Chr 11:2) and the false prophet from Nehelam whom Jeremiah denounced (Jer 29:24-32). The remainder are genealogical entries in Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah — Levites (1 Chr 9:14, 16; 15:8; 24:6; 26:4-7), priests (Neh 10:8; 12:6, 18), and laymen (Ezr 8:13; 10:21, 31). Greek renders it Samaias; translations consistently transliterate: Spanish 'Semaias,' German 'Schemaja.' 41×
