Shammah — a personal name borne by several men including a son of Jesse and an Edomite chief
Shammah (Hebrew shammah, possibly meaning 'desolation' or 'astonishment') identifies at least three distinct individuals in the Hebrew Bible. An Edomite chief descended from Esau through Reuel appears in Genesis 36:13, 17 and 1 Chronicles 1:37. More prominently, Shammah was Jesse's third son and David's brother, present at the anointing scene in 1 Samuel 16:9 and again at the Israelite camp facing Goliath (1 Sam 17:13). A third Shammah appears among David's mighty warriors (2 Sam 23:11, 25, 33). The name is remarkably stable across translations: Spanish 'Shammah,' French 'Shammah,' German 'Schamma.'

Senses
1. Shammah (personal name) The proper name Shammah, applied to several individuals: (a) an Edomite chief, son of Reuel and grandson of Esau (Gen 36:13, 17; 1 Chr 1:37); (b) the third son of Jesse and brother of David (1 Sam 16:9; 17:13); and (c) warriors among David's mighty men (2 Sam 23:11, 25, 33). The LXX renders these variously as Somme, Samma, and Samaia, but all seven occurrences designate this personal name without semantic subdivision.
