Ramoth, a place name designating cities in Israel, most notably the fortified city of Ramoth-Gilead
Derived from a root meaning 'height,' Ramoth names one or more elevated cities, the most significant being Ramoth-Gilead in the tribal territory of Gad. Designated a city of refuge (Deut 4:43; Josh 20:8; 21:38), it later became a flashpoint between Israel and Aram—Ahab died trying to recapture it (1 Kgs 22:3–6), and Jehu was anointed king there (2 Kgs 9:1–4). A second Ramoth, assigned to Issachar's Levites (1 Chr 6:58), also appears. French 'Ramoth,' German 'Ramot,' and Spanish 'Ramot' all preserve the name consistently.

Senses
1. Ramoth (place name) A proper noun designating elevated cities, preeminently Ramoth-Gilead, a city of refuge in Gad (Deut 4:43; Josh 20:8) and a strategic military site in the wars between Israel and Aram (1 Kgs 22:3–6; 2 Kgs 8:28; 9:1). A second Ramoth in Issachar is a Levitical city (1 Chr 6:58). The name means 'heights,' and multilingual glosses—French 'Ramoth,' Spanish 'Ramot,' German 'Ramot'—uniformly transliterate it as a geographic proper noun. 21×
