To creep, swarm, move along the ground; of small creatures crawling or gliding over the earth.
A verb used almost exclusively of small ground-dwelling creatures in creation and classification texts. In Genesis 1 God commands the earth to bring forth living things, and ramas describes the movement of creatures that neither walk upright nor fly but glide, crawl, or swarm along the surface. Leviticus 11 and 20 employ it in dietary legislation to distinguish clean from unclean animals. The term carries no negative connotation in itself -- it simply characterizes a mode of locomotion. Spanish 'arrastrarse' ('to drag oneself') and English 'creep' both reflect this low, ground-hugging motion.
Senses
1. to creep, swarm, move — To move along the ground by creeping, crawling, or swarming, said of small animals such as reptiles, insects, and other ground-level creatures. Central to the Priestly creation account (Gen 1:21, 26, 28, 30) and the Flood narrative (Gen 7:8, 14; 8:17, 19), where it classifies a distinct category of animal locomotion. Also appears in dietary law (Lev 11:44, 46; 20:25) and in Ezekiel 38:20 for a cosmic-scale shaking that affects all creeping things. 17×
