Rimmon, personal name of a Benjamite from Beeroth
This Rimmon (distinct from the deity and place names) was a man from Beeroth in Benjamin, father of Rechab and Baanah. His sons were military captains under Ish-bosheth who assassinated Saul's son, bringing his head to David in hopes of reward. David instead executed them for killing a righteous man in his house, then displayed their bodies publicly. The name Rimmon was evidently used for both deities and people in ancient Israel.
Senses
1. sense 1 — The name identifies a Benjamite whose sons committed regicide. Second Samuel 4:2, 5, and 9 all mention 'the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite'—Rechab and Baanah, who served as raiders under Ish-bosheth but treacherously murdered him during his midday rest. When they brought the severed head to David expecting praise, he pronounced them guilty of shedding innocent blood and had them executed. The patronymic 'sons of Rimmon' appears in each reference, anchoring their identity to their father and city. 3×
