Este verbo denota un movimiento errante o inquieto, ya sea un desplazamiento literal o un vagar figurado en sentido espiritual. La raíz sugiere ir y venir sin propósito fijo ni sujeción. Su uso bíblico es limitado y a veces textualmente problemático, pero el sentido fundamental de un movimiento sin ancla se mantiene en todos los contextos donde aparece.
