Riblah, a city in the land of Hamath on the Orontes, used as a military staging ground by Egypt and Babylon
A strategic city on the Orontes River in the land of Hamath, Riblah served as the forward command post for the great empires that dominated Israel's final decades. Pharaoh Necho imprisoned Jehoahaz there and imposed tribute on Judah (2 Kgs 23:33). Later, Nebuchadnezzar made Riblah his base for conducting the siege of Jerusalem, and it was there that Zedekiah's sons were slaughtered before his eyes before he himself was blinded (2 Kgs 25:6–7; Jer 52:9–10). The city also appears as a boundary marker for the promised land (Num 34:11).

Senses
1. Riblah (place name) The proper name of a city in the territory of Hamath on the Orontes River, functioning as an imperial military headquarters during the late monarchy. Pharaoh Necho detained Jehoahaz there (2 Kgs 23:33), and Nebuchadnezzar used it as his command post during the siege of Jerusalem (2 Kgs 25:6, 20–21; Jer 39:5–6; 52:9–10, 26–27). It also marks the northeastern boundary of the promised land (Num 34:11). Arabic renders the preposition-plus-name as في رِبْلَةَ ('in Riblah'), Spanish as 'en Ribla,' reflecting consistent treatment as a toponym across traditions. 11×
