Rabbah — 'the great city,' capital of Ammon (modern Amman, Jordan); also a town in Judah
Meaning 'great' or 'populous,' Rabbah (רַבָּה) typically designates the Ammonite capital, frequently introduced in its fuller form 'Rabbah of the sons of Ammon' (רַבַּת בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן). This is the city where Og's massive iron bedstead was kept (Deut 3:11), where David's general Joab laid siege during the Bathsheba crisis (2 Sam 11:1; 12:26-29), and against which the prophets thundered judgment (Jer 49:2-3; Amos 1:14). Known as Philadelphia in the Hellenistic period, it survives as modern Amman. A second, lesser-known Rabbah appears among Judah's towns (Josh 15:60).
Senses
1. Rabbah (Ammonite capital) — The fortified capital of the Ammonites, situated about 28 miles east of the Jordan River. Its fuller designation רַבַּת בְּנֵי עַמּוֹן appears in 2 Samuel 12:26-27, Deuteronomy 3:11, and Ezekiel 21:25. Spanish and English both transliterate as 'Rabbah,' while French and German similarly preserve the Semitic form. The city figures prominently in David's wars and in prophetic oracles against Ammon. 15×
