Kiriath-jearim — a Gibeonite city on the Judah-Benjamin border where the ark rested after its return from Philistia
Qiryat Ye'arim ('city of forests') is a town of the Gibeonite confederacy (Josh 9:17) situated on the border between Judah and Benjamin, appearing 26 times under this name and its variants. Its greatest claim to fame is housing the Ark of the Covenant for roughly two decades after the Philistines returned it via Beth-shemesh (1 Sam 6:21-7:2). The ark remained in the house of Abinadab on the hill at Kiriath-jearim until David brought it to Jerusalem in a momentous procession (1 Chr 13:5-6; 2 Chr 1:4). The Psalmist alludes to this tradition in the cryptic 'we found it in the fields of Jaar' (Ps 132:6), a poetic abbreviation of the city's name. In genealogical texts, Kiriath-jearim appears among the clans of Judah descended from Caleb (1 Chr 2:50-53), and its inhabitants are counted in the return census (Neh 7:29; Ezra 2:25). The prophet Uriah son of Shemaiah hailed from this town (Jer 26:20). The LXX renders it Kariathriarim.

Senses
1. Kiriath-Jearim (city) A Gibeonite city (Josh 9:17) meaning 'city of forests,' located on the Judah-Benjamin border, most famous as the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant after its return from Philistia (1 Sam 7:1-2; 1 Chr 13:5-6). Also appears in tribal boundary lists (Josh 15:9, 60; 18:14-15), genealogies of Judah (1 Chr 2:50-53), the post-exilic return census (Neh 7:29; Ezra 2:25), and as the hometown of the prophet Uriah (Jer 26:20). The poetic abbreviation 'fields of Jaar' (Ps 132:6) preserves its forest etymology. The LXX renders it Kariathriarim. 26×
