Kishon (Qishon); a river/wadi in northern Israel, site of Sisera's defeat and Elijah's execution of Baal's prophets.
The proper name Qishon (Kishon), a seasonal river or wadi in the Jezreel Valley of northern Israel. It is famous as the site where God defeated Sisera's army: the torrent of Kishon swept away the Canaanite chariots (Judg 4:7, 13; 5:21). Deborah's victory song celebrates the 'ancient river' (nahal qedumim) Kishon with fierce poetic intensity. The river reappears in 1 Kings 18:40, where Elijah brings the prophets of Baal down to the brook Kishon and executes them after the contest on Mount Carmel. In Psalm 83:9, the psalmist prays that God would do to Israel's current enemies as he did to Sisera at the Kishon.
Senses
1. Qishon — The Qishon (Kishon), a river or seasonal wadi in the Jezreel Valley of northern Israel, associated with two dramatic divine interventions. In the Deborah-Barak narrative, God uses the swollen Kishon to sweep away Sisera's chariots (Judg 4:7, 13), and Deborah's song celebrates 'the torrent Kishon swept them away, that ancient torrent' (Judg 5:21). Spanish 'Cisón'/'Kishón' and French 'Kison'/'Kishon' reflect standard transliteration patterns. The river reappears when Elijah executes the prophets of Baal at the brook Kishon after the contest on Mount Carmel (1 Kgs 18:40). Psalm 83:9 invokes the Kishon victory as a paradigm of divine deliverance. 6×
