Kadesh-barnea was the most significant stopping point during Israel's forty years in the wilderness, serving as both a staging ground for the failed attempt to enter Canaan and a long-term encampment. From here the twelve spies were sent out (Num 13:26), and here Israel remained 'many days' after God's judgment (Deut 1:46). It figures prominently in the boundary descriptions of the Promised Land (Num 34:4; Josh 15:3) and marks the distance from Horeb—eleven days' journey (Deut 1:2). The thirty-eight years between Kadesh-barnea and crossing the Zered defined a generation's wandering (Deut 2:14).
