Male goat, he-goat; used in sacrificial offerings and as a symbol of power in Daniel's visions.
A male goat or he-goat, appearing in both ritual and apocalyptic contexts. In Daniel's vision, the tsaphir is the prominent he-goat that charges from the west without touching the ground, symbolizing Alexander the Great and the Greek empire (Dan 8:5, 8, 21). In cultic usage, the word denotes he-goats brought for sin offerings and temple rededication (2 Chr 29:21; Ezra 8:35). Spanish 'macho cabrío' and French 'bouc' both capture the masculine specificity of this term, distinguishing it from the more generic words for goat.

Senses
1. male goat, he-goat A male goat or he-goat, used in both prophetic-symbolic and sacrificial-ritual contexts. In Daniel 8, the tsaphir is the conspicuous he-goat from the west — identified explicitly as the king of Greece (Dan 8:21) — whose great horn is broken and replaced by four. Spanish 'macho cabrío' and French 'bouc' both emphasize the masculine gender of the animal. In the cultic sphere, the plural construct tsephirei izzim denotes he-goats brought for sin offerings during Hezekiah's temple rededication (2 Chr 29:21) and Ezra's post-exilic return (Ezra 8:35). The word is distinctly late Biblical Hebrew, appearing only in Chronicles, Ezra, and Daniel.
