Hophra, pharaoh of Egypt who reigned 589-570 BC, mentioned in prophecy against Egypt
Hophra was the Egyptian pharaoh who ruled during Jeremiah's ministry. Known to the Greeks as Apries and recorded in Egyptian monuments as Uah-abra, he was the fourth king of Egypt's 26th dynasty. Jeremiah prophesied that God would deliver this powerful monarch into the hands of his enemies, just as He had delivered Zedekiah king of Judah. The prophecy came to pass when Hophra was eventually overthrown by his co-regent Amasis.

Senses
1. sense 1 This proper name appears only in Jeremiah's oracle against Egypt (Jer 44:30), where the prophet declares God will hand Pharaoh Hophra over to his enemies. The multilingual evidence consistently identifies this as a specific Egyptian ruler, with English using 'Chophra' and Spanish 'Jofra,' both attempting to render the Hebrew pronunciation. Historical sources confirm this refers to the pharaoh whose ambitious foreign policy included supporting Judah against Babylon, making his eventual downfall a powerful vindication of Jeremiah's prophetic word.
