moles (as diggers), possibly in Isaiah 2:20, though the Hebrew text is textually problematic
This term, appearing only in Isaiah 2:20, is deeply uncertain textually. The traditional Hebrew reads 'to dig' plus 'rats,' yielding something like 'to the mole-rats to dig,' which is grammatically awkward. Many scholars emend the text to read 'to the moles' (la-chaparpparot), understanding moles as the animals that would receive the discarded idols. The context depicts people throwing away their silver and gold idols 'to the moles and to the bats' on the day of divine judgment. Both animals—moles as underground dwellers and bats as cave inhabitants—represent dark, hidden, contemptible places where worthless idols would be cast.

Senses
1. sense 1 Isaiah 2:20's context envisions the day when people finally recognize their idols' worthlessness, casting them into dark places inhabited by moles and bats. The multilingual glosses (moles, topos) where available support the rodent interpretation. The textual difficulty reflects scribal confusion, but the theological point remains clear: humanity's proud idolatry will end in shame, with precious metal statues discarded as refuse in rodent holes and bat caves—a reversal of the reverence with which they were crafted.
